Castelli Romani - Guide to the Tourist Area

 Useful information and travel guide Castelli Romani: All cities and towns.

The Castelli Romani are historical and geographic area of the province of Rome, Lazio. Castles are thirteen municipalities in the Colli Albani, arranged concentrically on the heights of the ancient volcanic Volcano Laziale from millennia that share essentially the same story social, political and economic. The historical centers of the Castles are Albano Laziale, Ariccia, Castel Gandolfo, Colonna, Frascati, Genzano di Roma, Grottaferrata, Marino, Monte Compatri, Monte Porzio Catone, Nemi, Rocca di Papa, Rocca Priora and Velletri.
The territory of the Castelli Romani is an area of volcanic origin from the collapse of volcano Laziale hundreds of thousands of years ago. The main mouth of the Volcano Laziale occupied the whole air of inner belt of the Castles: Following collapsed giving rise to numerous secondary mouths, of which the most important was the current Monte Cavo (949 m) in the town of Rocca di Papa . The other mouths of the smaller lakes have become Volcano between 100,000 and 20,000 years ago, and have largely been drained over the centuries: in addition to Lake Albano and Lake Nemi, respectively, in the town of Castel Gandolfo Latium and Albano and Nemi, we must mention the lakes drained of Campovecchio in Grottaferrata of the Round Pond or Pavona at Castel Gandolfo and the Pond of Juturna Valley Well today at Albano Laziale of Vallericcia to Ariccia, the Slough of Doganella in Rocca di Pope, Pantano Secco and Monte Porzio Monte Porzio Catone, and the legendary Lake Regillo in Frascati.
According to the classification given by the Geological Survey of Italy most of the Castelli Romani area consists of lands classified as V2, that is the final eruptive material giving rise to the famous lava stone. The best known mining areas of the tuff are Marino, Albano Laziale, to Ariccia and some areas of the Valle Latina.
Velletri is doubt be welcomed in the castle because since the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century, the city still retained the status of free city, thus distinguishing itself from the total area of the town and never having a fief no sir, thus never having a "castle".
Larian instead, although it was an important castle of the family feud Savelli, since 1436, year of destruction, until 1969 remained a fraction of Velletri. However, conventionally the two places, geographically part of the Colli Albani, Castles are considered in all respects.
Others see even the city of Ciampino, who in 1974 broke away from the town of Marino, despite Ciampino was born, even as a place name, until the seventeenth century by an estate of Monsignor John Justin Ciampini (1633-1698), called precisely vineyard and Ciampini situated in the territory of Marino.
The main water resource of the Castles is represented by two volcanic lakes Albano and Nemi. Both lakes, along with other then drained basins, were born during the Volcano hydromagmatic Laziale, encounter the magma and water in the subsoil, between 100,000 and 20,000 years ago.
Lake Albano is the deepest lake in Lazio, reaching 170 meters in depth. Its mass of water is approximately 460 million cubic meters. Now mostly banned for swimming because of pollution, its banks remain interesting archaeological finds from the Roman period, as the emissary of Rome, flume along 1.8 kilometers in area, which goes into Mole Albano and Castel Gandolfo. The waters are the responsibility of the province of Rome, while its coast belong to the town of Castel Gandolfo and, to a lesser extent, Albano Laziale. (See Lake Albano)
Lake Nemi is a smaller lake in Lazio, with an area of 1.67 km2 and a maximum depth of 33 meters. The waters are the responsibility of the province of Rome, while its coast belong to the town of Nemi. On its shores there are many Roman ruins, belonging to the legendary Temple of Diana Nemorense. On the lake bottom were also found the two famous ships of Nemi. From the lake also probably an emissary of the Roman period, which comes out to Vallericcia.
Among the other lakes dried up, it is important Vallericcia the crater, which has an outlet which receives also the waters of Lake Nemi.
The area is full of spring water castellano: among the most well known water sources remind those of:
Water Algida in the territory of Rocca Priora, which ensures water supply in Frascati and the area tuscolana;
Squarciarelli in the territory of Grottaferrata, giving rise to the Marana Water Mariana and ensure water supply in Grottaferrata;
Caput Aquae Ferentinum in the territory of Marino, which gives rise to the Marana assiura stones and water supply to Marino;
Precious water in the territory of Grottaferrata;
Malafitto in the territory of Ariccia, which ensures water supply in Castel Gandolfo, Albano Laziale and Ariccia;
Donzella water in the territory of Larian;
Faiola, in the territory of Velletri, which ensures the water supply in Genzano di Roma and Velletri.
