The island is divided into eight municipalities, all related to the province of Livorno: Portoferraio is the main one, the other fields in Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba, for a total of about 30 thousand inhabitants, which rose sharply in the summer. The climate of the island presents mainly Mediterranean characteristics, except for Mount huts where winters tend to be moderately cold. Precipitation is concentrated in autumn and appear to be fairly small. In prehistoric times the island was inhabited by Ilvati, an ancient people belonging to ethnic Ligurian - hence the ancient name of the island: Ilva. Rich deposits of iron, the island of Elba made possible the rise of the Etruscan civilization and the subsequent Roman military, whose soldiers were used as a weapon, the javelin with an iron tip, disposable weapon only possible with an unlimited availability of iron. The Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to Elba, and some villas are testimony: Villa dei Mulini in Portoferraio situated, with magnificent sea views and the summer residence of the course, Villa San Martino rented on the outskirts of the small town.
