Mugello - Guide to the Tourist Area

Useful information and travel guide Mugello: All cities and towns.

A few kilometers from Florence, among the rolling hills, tall cypress trees, the background of mountain peaks and passes, extends the territory of the Mugello. All easily accessible by bus and by car to various localities in the area allows the AI motorway exit at Barberino di Mugeilo. Numerous and interesting are the main and secondary roads. The fascinating old railway route of Faentina provides access to the territory of the Comunità Montana Mugello, both from the Romagna region, starting from Faenza, both from Tuscany, from Florence. Some lines of local public transport for traveling in the area.
The Mugello valley occupies the middle-upper catchment of the river Sieve is a wide basin bounded on the north by the main chain of the Apennines (from Mount Citerna the yoke of Dorella), south from the foothills of Mount Giovi and Mount Senario closed in the west by Mount Calvana beyond which lies the province of Prato.
Here we find the village of Barberino di Mugello, Borgo San Lorenzo, Dicomano, San Piero a Sieve, Scarperia, money orders and Vicchio.
The Mugello landscape is complex: from the thick woods of the ridges realm of wild boar, roe deer and foxes to the chestnut groves and olive trees, the vast flat land of old terraces confined by slopes planted with wheat and sunflowers, to the fertile valley where are located the main population centers and roads.
To the north, between the ridges of the Mugello and the steps that go down to Bologna and the Romagna, in the upper basin of the Santerno, Senio and Lamone there is the Upper Mugello Marradi, Firenzuola and Palazzuolo sul Senio.
The big rocks and peaks, although they are just over 1000 meters of altitude, heavy outlines and scenes, sometimes imposing.
The landscape is dominated by pristine forests of beech, chestnut, oak, occasionally broken by large pastures with juniper bushes, on rocky outcrops.
The purity of the water and the luxuriant vegetation of these valleys are an ideal habitat for many species of birds and fish.
The climate is transitional between that drive the Po Valley, where the cold winds blow freely down from the foothills of the Alps, and the milder, Mediterranean typical of central Italy.
The valley of Mugello, just below the summits of the highest mountain range, is often the meeting point of the cold north wind with the hot humid south-west, southeast and west: this means that in winter mists carried by the latter are often swept via other, or that this summer is to mitigate the humid heat that door.
The Mugello countryside is splendid in all seasons: the best way to taste and stay in old farmhouses carefully reconstructed by farmers, which offer accommodations in apartments or rooms, some offer catering and purchasing products grown by themselves and opportunity to confront the many recreational activities.
You can also travel in small but comfortable hotels, beautiful historic homes, restored and transformed into villages in country residence in the new bed and breakfast born mostly in country houses.
For a more direct contact with nature, you can stay in comfortable mountain huts and camping sites or in trails.
