Acquafondata is set like a jewel in the Comino Valley among the imposing ranges of the Mainarde.
At an altitude of 1,000m. the hamlet enjoys an enviable position in the middle of the valley.
The fresh air that can be breathed here makes it an ideal place to strengthen the spirit and the body when you feel stressed.
The name “Aqua fundata” recalls the origins of the village founded in the basin once occupied by Lake Vitecusum.
Legend has it that the Virgin of the Carmelo appeared to a young countrywoman as she was working in the country.
In memory of this event local people built the church of the Madonna del Carmelo, a very important worship place.
The Church of St. Margherita is tied instead to the figure of the Franciscan friar Domenico de Filippis.
The main activity which used to be once the production of wooden handicrafts and sheep-breeding is today the production of zampogne (bagpipes).
Every year in the second half of January people celebrate this unusual activity with the Zampogna National Festival.
The town is well worth visiting also for its forest nursery, deemed as one of the most spectacular in Latium
