The derivation of the name Airole assumptions are at least three: one concerns the location of the village, another allusion to the presence of herons in the river Roia, while a third refers to the legendary figure of Heron, magician and healer.
Airole, built by the Ventimiglia perhaps on an ancient Roman fort, is a town of medieval origin, located in the center of an ancient crossroads of routes from the valley and low Nervia Val Bever, surrounded by olive groves.
The typical Ligurian village, with houses and narrow streets nearby, has a conformation with concentric circles and lies at a point that dominates the two opposing banks of the river, the average Valley nerves and roads that linked Ventimiglia lower Piedmont.
