Charming small town with a characteristic horseshoe-shaped plant, lies at 475 meters on the slope of a hill, overlooking the Comino Valley.
Samnite origin, has been for seven centuries the most important center of the valley as evidenced by its many artistic treasures.
It was ruled by the Benedictines in the tenth century by the Counts of Aquino in the Middle Ages and later by the Gauls.
To these must be the transformation and beautification of the Ducal Palace, which houses some the famous Court Theatre, decorated with frescoes and stucco, and the Council Room with frescoes and paintings of the Neapolitan school of the eighteenth century.
Of great interest is the Church of St. Simeon the Prophet, decorated with baroque paintings and frescoes made by pupils of Luca Giordano and M. Stanzione, as well as the village is worth a visit Curtignale, an entire village deserted and uninhabited for over 400 years.
Alvito hosts the annual literary prize of Comino Valley and the International Meetings of Poetry.
