Amalfi (SA)

Amalfi Coast - Campania (Italy)

The main center and historic heart of the Amalfi Coast is Amalfi.
Serenity in the blue sky and sea, Amalfi, watched from the harbor, seems enclosed in the hollow of a hand.
At the top, the scenery of the mountains, articulated as a backdrop, dotted with houses down, a network of picturesque alleys and stairs, to the great square where the famous steps from the majestic cathedral dominates.
A unique setting, where historical memories are intertwined in an unforgettable natural beauty.
Suspended between the Lattari Mountains and the sea, the picturesque alleys of Amalfi now house a large number of tourists, but once lived the splendor of the powerful maritime republic which had its moment of maximum splendor between the tenth and twelfth century and that he could hold off the Lombards and Saracens.
Rich and populous, Amalfi entertained very active trade with the Orient.
In memory of power every four years in June Amalfi houses the Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics.
The town of Amalfi, clinging to the slope of the Coast, is characterized by the famous Duomo (ninth century).
Its scenic location at the top of a steep staircase that opens between the houses gathered around a small square, gives a special note to the historical center of Amalfi.
Affects the imposing facade of the church multicolored, illuminated with enamel and golden mosaics and the eardrum.
Traces of the Middle Ages are found in the elegant Cloister of Paradise with its arabesque lines.
From the cloister to the Chapel of the Crucifix, which was home to the Diocesan Museum.
The Chapel is the entrance to the crypt dating back to '200.
The architectural complex is one of the principal examples of Amalfi.
An exploration of Amalfi who wants to go beyond the most popular places will include Ancient Arsenal, where they built the famous galleys with over a hundred oars, loaded with goods destined for eastern markets.
At Palazzo Morelli has leased the City Hall and the Municipal Museum, houses the Tabula Amalphitana, the first code of maritime law established at the time of the Republic, valid throughout the Mediterranean.
Here you can also admire the famous cartoons of Domenico Morelli, painter of the most famous 800, which were derived from the mosaics that adorn the cathedral.
Amalfi is also famous as the home of the working paper by hand.
The first mills were built along the Valle dei Mulini, where is the Paper Museum.
This area is crossed by the river Canneto, and the nearby Valle delle Ferriere, an enchanting natural environment, are a Biogenetic Nature Reserve.
The climb from Amalfi is challenging but fascinating.
He discovered the remains of the mills that brought water to the old paper mills, and a hidden secret charms of nature: springs and waterfalls, views of the sea glimpsed in the lush Mediterranean vegetation.
