The town rises over a sandstone hill to which owes its name and faces a large area of vineyards.
It was chosen by the Longobard’s king Astolfo during its war against the Papal State for its strategic position.
On the uppermost part of the hill the king built a tower in 756 AD to protect the place and to control via Latina, a very important road as it linked Central and Southern Italy.
It was under the rule of the Conti of Ceccano until 1450 and then became a feud of the Colonna family.
Nothing is left now of the tower wanted by King Astolfo, because in the 11th century a castle was built where it stood, together with a series of square towers, of which only one is still visible as the others have become part of the houses.
From the convent it is possible to admire the only circular tower built in the village.
The area, full of vineyards, produces a typical Ciociarian wine.
