Arpino (FR)

Lazio (Italy)

Legend has that Arpino was founded by Saturn.
Before becoming part of the Papal State the village was under the rule of the Volscians, the Samnites and the Romans.
In 188 BC it received the Roman citizenship.
It was the birthplace of Caius Marius, Cicero and of the painter Cesari, better known as the Cavalier D'Arpino.
The acropolis is the centre of the town with its Porta Scea characterized by a pointed arch built with big stones cut obliquely.
This arch represents a unique example in Europe of a technique largely used in Asia Minor.
The Benedictine monastery of S. Andrea Apostolo is one of the most ancient enclosed monastery in this area, where it is possible to admire a cross depicting Christ Triumphant who defeats death.
In the 10th-century Church of S. Michele Arcangelo there are many 17th century works by the Cavalier D'Arpino.
Interesting are the bronze monuments depicting Caius Marius and Cicero, situated in Municipality Place.
The Museum of stringed instruments and the Museum of Wool testify to the long tradition of this village in these crafts.
Scattered around in the streets are stone pages which bears poems written in honour of Arpino by many international writers.
One of the most important events is the Certamen Ciceronianum Arpinas held in May in honour of the illustrious fellow citizen Cicero.
It is a contest which involves the translation and the comment of one of Cicero's famous text.
It is open to all European youths who gather here for an interesting socio-cultural exchange.
