Bari (BA)

Apulia (Italy)

Bari is a city of the sea with the old core that faces directly on the seafront, the longest in Italy.
Following the sea to the South you discover the wonderful buildings Umbertine and between the Teatro Kursaal Santalucia, an example of Art Nouveau. Continuing meet the Provincial Government Building with its art gallery and monumental buildings such as hotel-style littorio Nations.
Parallel to the sea are developed neighborhoods and Madonella Japigia. Continuing on towards the south, to Torre a Mare, a typical fishing village which owes its name to an ancient tower which is part of a sighting system that runs along the coast of Puglia.
The Promenade North, with the maritime station and the port can reach the Fiera del Levante when events and trade fairs, such as Campionaria of September, Orolevante, and Modalevante Expolevante.
Continuing along the SS. 16 it comes to fractions of Palese and S. Spirit, with marinas and numerous local, where to spend pleasant evenings. The peculiarity of these small towns is to have retained its own identity, easy and popular, so different from quelladella city.
The modern city, just outside the old town, was founded in 1813 by Joachim Murat, who laid the first stone at the intersection of Corso Vittorio Emanuelee Corso Cavour, which are two sides of the neighborhood Murat. Via Quintino Sella separates him from the nearest Liberty and the Railroad bounding to the south:
Beyond this lie the residential districts of San Pasquale, Picone and careers. In the latter are the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas with its green dome and the park of Largo 2 June.
Continuing inward, we find the modern district Poggiofranco. The broad highway which runs from north to south, allowing the connection to the neighborhoods Sao Paulo and Stanic.
La Vecchia Bari, contains the story, the soul of this city. Originally it was protected by a wall which is only part of the sea, the Wall lapped by the waters of the sea until the thirties.
Very suggestive is the vision that you have on via Venice. Starting from Piazza del Ferrarese and along the walls, it overlooks one of the most wonderful views of Bari: the small harbor, palm trees, the colonnade trajectory, Teatro Margherita, Barion Rowing Club and the Waterfront.
It comes, then, at the Fort St. Abate, a tower of the '300, with the lookout at the top. The base of the fort, now converted into an exhibition area, houses a chapel dedicated to the patron saint of animals, where according to tradition, January 17 there were Benedetti.
From the Wall, one faces the Basilica of St. Nicholas and Court of Catapano and continuing up to the Monastery of St. Scholastica, the glance the port.
The ancient city is a maze of narrow streets, open spaces and squares with the flagstones of "chianche" white, combined with the flagstones lava guide us in the village. The architecture was preserved, stratified, the different styles that mark the dominations: every corner is a discovery, a curiosity.
Borgo Antico is a city within a city, alive, button, with its symbols and traditions. La Notte di San Giovanni (June 23), for example, women prepare to hand the orecchiette and offer as a good omen and a sign of hospitality in the tradition of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the city miracle worker, protector of children. His cult was built (1197) the beautiful Basilica, the largest church in the Romanesque style. In the crypt are the remains of the Holy stolen from Myra by 62 sailors.
In their homeland, Baresi spend two holidays in a 7 to 9 May which attracts pilgrims from around the world with a spectacular historical parade, the other December 6, more dear to Baresi and characterized by rituals suggestive, like the pilgrimage of girls looking for a husband. As is frequently the case with the marine community, the Baresi, sailors and adventurers, they chose St. Nicholas and "the expectations" protect their own trades which attracted other people from around the Mediterranean.
Going through the village of San Nicola to the cathedral of San Sabino, via the Monastery of Mount Caramel with the same name, is a hive of convents, monasteries and shrines built by various communities:
Venetians with a small jewel of San Marco and the devotees with the Orthodox Church of St. John Chrysostom.
Continuing meets the Arch of Wonders which is said to have been built overnight by a Lombard family because two lovers could meet.
The presence of the Arabs, however, is evidenced by Capa dù Turk, bas-relief of the head of a Moor, who was remarkable because, in a night of witches, ventured into the maze of alleys of the Borgo.
Near the ancient Cathedral of San Sabino, an authentic jewel of Romanesque Pugliese, The Norman Castle are separated by a moat defensive BorgoAntico still visible. The core of the castle is protected by two sets of walls, high estrette internal ones built by the Normans to defend against sieges, low and wide external ones built by the Aragonese to withstand firearms. A visit inside is a real journey into the past, including arches, doorways, halls and courts that host exhibitions and cultural events.
The Village is full of noble residences as the palaces Alberotanza, Star or Tanzi and palaces of power as customs officers or seat in the Piazza Mercantile. In one corner of this you can see the Column of Justice or of infamy where they were exposed to public ridicule people insolvent.
In the evening the old town comes alive in the many public places, while cultural activities are hosted in the Sala Murat Vallisa and in the auditorium, in the church.
By day, the ancient village is transformed according to the rhythms of ancient trade and among the shops and shops, you can enjoy the pleasure of shopping without hurrying.
To better understand the history of Bari Vecchia is essential in its symbolic places to visit, to embrace the spirit that lives in people: religious, mercantile spirit, hospitality and a certain independence from authority. Bari is the real holder of the Levant.
Dal Borgo Antico, through the arches of Piazza Curlews, you will reach the District Murat, beating heart of the city, with shops, offices, trendy restaurants. The district has an urban setting checkerboard with parallel and perpendicular streets where it is easy to navigate.
Via Sparano is the continuation of the ideal location because the Borgo Antico is the designer shopping street, represented by the great palace Mincuzzi authoritatively.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele is a broad boulevard lined with restaurants and plenty of space for walking and parking. Here we find the Prefecture near Piazza Massari terminus of several bus, shuttle bus and taxi stops.
Overlooking the Prefecture are the Palace and the Teatro Piccinni delComune the porch "Doric" Palazzo Fizzarotti later is testimony to the Venetian style of the early '900 and influence on many cities of Venice on the Adriatic. The course leads to Piazza Garibaldi, where starts the fourth Liberty.
Opposite to Piazza Garibaldi, Corso Cavour, one of the sides of the quadrilateral Murat, opens with Teatro Margherita, now under renovation, which rises above the sea with a structure of piles.
Walking along the tree lined Corso Cavour, the palaces of the Bank of Italy and the Chamber of Commerce anticipates the restoration site of the Teatro Petruzzelli, whose foyer was already completed. To the right of the theater, take away Cognetti where we find the Palace by the Apulian completed in 1932.
Inside, the decorations of Duilio Cambellotti celebrate the water, source of life and prosperity, and stress the importance of the largest aqueduct in Europe.
