Caccuri (KR)

Calabria (Italy)

Caccuri, charming town that overlooks the entire province of Crotone, is one of the villages that still offers artistic and environmental characteristics of all unusual.
The urban fabric, in fact, retains the characteristics of the old center consists of a network of streets and alleys that lead everyone to the castle, an imposing manor house dating from the sixth century. d.C.
The village was a fief of Polyxena Ruffo (wife of Francesco Sforza) and families Sangiorgio, De Riso, Spinelli, Cimino, Carafa, Cavalcanti, Barracco.
Simonetta family home, is perched on a spur.
The ancient village is today a tourist's eye center is not yet completely disfigured by concrete.
The country is dominated by the medieval castle, a charming manor house dating to the sixth century AD C. built to defend the Byzantine possessions during the Lombard invasion.
The whole building itself has a certain charm but certainly worthy of particular note is the Chapel of the Cavalcanti, located in the lobby of the Castle.
The interior decorated with paintings and sculptures attributed to the Neapolitan school of 1800, the coffered wooden ceiling of 1700, the portal stone masons work of the masters of the period, making it a true masterpiece.
The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (fifteenth century) dominates the old town.
Restoration is the last survivor of the bell tower, which houses a precious bell dedicated to the Madonna of 1578 that the University of Caccuri commissioned to Angelo Rinaldi.
A three-nave church boasts inside the Renaissance style and adorned with altars symmetrically hosting statues and paintings of great value, as the Last Supper and the Transfiguration (XVIII), the Immaculate, the pulpit and font.
On the right side there is the Chapel of San Gaetano, believed to be the ancient baptistry of the country, unique, why should not the side of the church but in front.
The shrine dates back to 1908 San Rocco, built perhaps during an epidemic in honor of the Patron Saint.
It is located near Via Murorotto, or the path that runs along the ancient route of the wall that protected the village from the attacks, in which one can admire a fine brick arch.
Nearby lies the ancient way too Judeca, once the site of a Jewish synagogue, how can they prove the reliefs present.
Not to be missed: the castle, the Abbey of Santa Maria del Soccorso and the Chapel of the Congregation of the Holy Rosary (plenary indulgence is granted since 1679, is still visible the papal bull of Innocent XI).
Here was the birthplace of the statesman Cicco Simonetta, Secretary of Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, after his death became the ruler of the Duchy of Milan until Ludovico il Moro, considering it hindered his ascent to the throne, had him murdered in Pavia in 1410.
A Caccuri the Brigante Musolino was shot by Mario Camerini.
