Cagliari (CA)

Sardinia (Italy)

Cagliari, gateway to the many who choose the island for a holiday, next to a crystal clear sea and, to a beach the most beautiful and longest throughout the Mediterranean, offers unspoilt nature made up of lagoons and unique natural oasis in Europe.
Castle is the first destination for a visit to Cagliari, the ancient fortress city, the historic district was still closed, in part, from the walls that made it a bulwark.
Along the ramparts rise the two medieval towers of white stone, and open the doors that have withstood the scrapping nineteenth century.
The walk will draw from the entrances of St. Pancras then (or s'avanzada) or the Lions' Gate, continuing through the maze of narrow streets of sign Spanish.
Monuments: The tour makes a stop first in the churches: the Cathedral, the sixteenth-century Church of the Immaculate in via Lamarmora and then, in the lower part of the district, those of S. Maria del Sacro Monte di Pieta, St. Cross, St. Joseph.
Some of these, valuable furnishings and architecture, are not accessible for restoration still in progress.
Once the political, religious and administrative center of the city, the Castle is the headquarters of the buildings: the old town hall, Palazzo Viceregio, I'arcivescovado, gathered around the cathedral, the most distant Seziate, the Arsenal now restructured in Cittadella dei Musei and, descending, Belgrano Palace, home to the University.
Many other private residences, a sign of the presence of a nobility was tenaciously clinging to the places of his history. Museums: Castello houses the most important treasures, gathered in two museums.
Cittadella dei Musei find place in the four collections. National Archaeological Museum: This rich collection of objects and other artifacts, including many pieces of high quality. Succession is reconstructed in the island's ancient cultures through pottery and statuettes pre-Nuragic, ingots of copper, bronzes and ceramics nuragiche, inscriptions, pottery and Phoenician tombs, stems (one of the most important collections in the world) and beautiful jewelry Punic.
Of particular interest from the necropolis of Nora and Tuvixeddu (Punic objects produced or imported from Greece, Italy and Spain), the rich endowment of ceramics, pottery, glass, statues and Roman sarcophagi, gold from the High Middle Ages.
Also important was the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Built by Pisani in sec. XIII, instead of the oldest church dedicated to St. Cecilia, has undergone profound changes since the style. The cathedral's interior has three naves, with a raised chancel and transept.
Among the many works of art in the cathedral: the pulpit, the work of William of Pisa, XV and XVI century paintings, wooden sculptures of the fourteenth century.
Upon request we can also visit the Museum chapters, where are gathered the most important works of the Treasury of the Cathedral.
