Campana (CS)

Calabria (Italy)

Historiographical tradition identifies it with the old Kalasarna or Kaliserna spoken of by Strabo (vi. 254.1,3). the place name, of Greek origin, appears to be borrowed from grazing on therein ( "Kaìòs-Arnos' = bell'agnello: land of beautiful lambs) or the nature of rugged and heavily defended by its strategic position (" Kalòs-Arna `= beautiful stronghold , or even "Chala-Arna` '= prominent rock). The 'castrum', in Norman, was given the name "Land of the Bell," the presence, according to tradition, a bell, placed in the town tower, which served to rally and give the peasants' s alarm in case of Saracen attacks. Surrounded by many houses of farmers and shepherds (Francavilla, St. Peter, St. Iapico, St. John's Fountain, St. Lawrence), of which today remains the only place names, probably Kaliserna Bell became the ninth-tenth century, at the time piratical incursions of the Saracens, which crosses the river Nica (ancient Hylias?) go inside for their raids. The danger certainly provoked pressing urbanization of many Casalini toward the center strategically perched better. In Norman times the name of "Land of the Bell" means the strategic center fortified or "Castrum".
The new place-name "land campanae" is mentioned the first time in the Angevin Registers the time of his feoffment. First nominee seems to have been the French Biviano of Clarence, who was succeeded by William Enard Bayre. In 1271-72, the latter's death, the Curia gave it to William Brunello, Deputy Marshal of the Kingdom of Naples.
After a brief period during which the feud was Muzio Matera, from 1417 Campana links its feudal history to the county of Cariati. Strung like nominee Polyxena Ruffo, sister Covella, Marino Marzano. Returning briefly to the Royal land from 1479 stood at Geronimo enfeoffed Riario (1479-82), Geronimo Sanseverino (1482-85). In 1505 the fief was granted to Giovambattista Spinelli "in return for his loyalty and servitude" to the Aragonese house. Spinels, except for an interlude in 1534, Bell held until 1678, when Charles Spinelli, heavily in debt, sold it along with the Baron Alexander Bocchigliero Labonia red to 43,000 ducats. In 1694 the estate was bought by Sambiase Bartolo, whose family kept him with the title of Prince to the revolutionary laws of 1806. During the French decade (1806-15) became the capital of the district in the district of Rossano and had the district court with prison mandamentale. It was seat notary until shortly before. After the earthquakes of 1825 and 1836 triggers the process of development that gave the country's current urban configuration with the birth of the new populous districts of Convent and St. Cross and with the recent projection Sila (zones Argutolo and S. Leonardo).
