Forio is a municipality in the province of Naples, on the island of Ischia, the largest island.
Forio has suffered over the centuries several invasions by the Saracens, which marked signs in the local preserves. In the fifties many artists around the world were given appointment in the City, attracted by the beauty of the place and the friendliness of the residents.
Along the coast many rise towers and defense, the most famous of these is the Tower.
The old town has a special charm with its palaces, typical streets, the "workshops" for local artists, the tiny craft shops of pottery, churches rich in history and art.
Very impressive is the famous church located at the end of a rescue of looking good square, square, John Paul II (formerly Piazzale del Soccorso), recently restored precisely at the pastoral visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II on (May 5, 2002 ).
You can also enjoy a shopping center typical of a popular tourist site.
Other interesting points, particularly from the tourism point of view, are the numerous beaches, including beach S. Francesco di Paola and the beach of Chaia, Citara with the famous Poseidon Gardens and the spa park in the village of Panza, Bay Sorgeto with natural pools of warm water in the sea, between the volcanic rocks.
Of particular interest are the Gardens La Mortella, unique and certainly worth a visit for those who spend a few days on the island.
Administratively encompasses several districts and the village of Panza, some 7,000 inhabitants, which over the centuries has suffered several attacks by the Saracens, which marked signs in the local preserves.
Another point of interest, including tourism, is Sorgeto Bay, situated between the volcanic rocks, which contains natural pools of warm water navy.
Forio also has its own dialect, foriano, characterized by sound and its terms, very different from those of other island communities and, especially, the Neapolitan dialect entirely alien, at least originally and culturally, the Island.
Foriano dialect, with a difficult phonetics, however, is better known, thanks to the great literary production foriano that the municipality can boast.
Nearby, however, is not like the dialect Panzese in the village of Panza, too far from the Neapolitan dialect, as well as other dialects islanders. Together with Foriano is one of the 7 dialects still spoken by true Ischia.
