The city is spread in its oldest part, around the medieval castle that dominates the valley of Fredane, while the modern town extends to the east. Gesualdo is located to 676 m. sea level, the sour, however, varies from about 300 meters of the plain near the river Fredane place south of downtown, the area of about 800 Otica in the north.
Gesualdo has a territorial extension of 27.00 km ², filled with olive groves and vineyards, scents that send to heaven, boasts among its famous fruits and vegetables, the cult of celery, which map in this region grows particularly lush.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Gesualdo began life with the Lombard domination in Italy.

The name derives from the medieval Gisivaldum Gesualdo, which according to the reconstruction of the historic Father Cipriano de Meo, could come from the name of Lombard knight "or Ghizo Gis", probably the first ruler of the feud, and "Wald" (forest), then the forest Gis, Gisivaldum.
The advent of Carlo Gesualdo (Venosa, March 8, 1566 - Gesualdo, September 8, 1613) marked the rebirth of the village Gesualdo and his dedication to 'City of Culture'.
