Grosotto (SO)

Valtellina - Lombardy (Italy)

Grosotto, in the province of Sondrio is a village of 1685 inhabitants and one of the 12 municipalities forming part of the Montana Valtellina di Tirano. It covers an area of about 53 sq km, the highest proportion at 2840 m (SCIM de Sasuméer) and the minimum at 565 m in the river Adda bordering Mazzo di Valtellina. The country is situated mostly on the side and the western branch of the Rhaetian Valgrosina on the left side of the Adda way into the town of Grosio and to Deck, reaching the edge of the town of Monno (BS).

History
The first document is dated 1080 and covers Grosotto regards the gift, by Nantero Arduino was the monastery of Buccinigo Sant'Abbondio some farms located in the parish of Deck: in Grausuura (Gros) in Grouse (Grosotto) and spot fundo et Serni (Sernio).
The Roman did not leave many traces in Grosotto. However, during the restoration of castles, you've discovered that, until the early centuries of the Christian era there was a proto continued attendance. With the discovery of two rock tombs in the area formerly called Torraccia, it was discovered that they were part of a funerary chapel dating back to Lombard.
The existence of the City of Grosotto is proven for the first time in an inventory of goods belonging to S. Remigio in Valposchiavo, written in 1255. In the thirteenth century some autonomous administrative forms, typical of the rural council, were consolidated and handling included in the first document attesting to the above is dated December 7, 1325. The country at that time part of the estate to the De Misenta Episcopal feud first and following the Venosta. The territory was divided into five cantons: hence the blazon of Grosotto with the snake five turns.
With the reorganization carried out under the Visconti, the City of Grosotto became part of the upper third of the Valtellina.
The rural church did not follow a bunch of parallel self-management experience in the civilian sphere: indeed Grosotto parish became independent only in 1625. In 1487, during the invasion of Grisons in Valtellina, Grosotto was spared from looting and the local people gave this grace to Mary. It was for this reason that erected the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace.
Thanks to the devotion of the inhabitants of Grosotto, the Dean of Deck Giovanni Andrea Ruskin, in 1524, confirmed the erection of the "downs of Santa Maria" entrusted with the maintenance of churches in the country. The City of Grosotto liberated the rights of feudal origin due to Bunch in 1549 and in 1562, the year in which Taddeo di Giacomo Robustelli, representative of Grosotto, redeemed the right of first fruits dall'arciprete Maffeo Crotti paying it 600 imperial pounds.
There was a very difficult period for the inhabitants of Grosotto. In 1587, rioting between Catholics and the Protestants who made the basis for the Valtellina revolt against the Protestants, led by Giacomo Robustelli, left Grosotto in 1620. To avoid the intrusion of the Reformed Catholic churches in the city bought a building for worship gospel. Between 1595 and 1597 were processed in Tirano, by magistrates Graubünden, eighteen Grosotto people accused of witchcraft. This generated a long series of complaints that helped create a climate of suspicion in the country and terror. From 1615 to 1618, Grosotto famine reigned, from 1620 to 1637 wars raged Valtellina with rapes, arson and looting, and as if that were not enough, from 1630 onwards, the plague did more than 500 victims. To this was added the stay in the country since 1635 French troops under the command of the Duke of Rohan.
In 1639, finally, he signed the capitulation of Milan ending the war. The Valtellina returned so under the Grisons. The community of Grosotto, sorely tried by all previous adverse events, he found the strength to recover quickly.
With the French Revolution, disappeared the municipal autonomy and related statutes that held up. In 1797 the Valtellina became part of the Cisalpine Republic and then aggregated to the first Kingdom of Italy. After the Congress of Vienna (1815) was awarded to Austria and the United Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.
From 1797 to 1815 Grosotto was aggregated to the district of Tirano and then into the deck, than in Bormio, Sondrio, bridges and finally Grosio. In 1816 he was detached from the district Grosio and aggregate to Tirano until the unification of Italy.
