Imperia, Liguria's fourth largest city, was founded in 1923 as a joint union of Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, two towns in the west coast from the mouth of the river divided empire.
The two nuclei remain distinct despite the administrative union and building development.
Porto Maurizio was an ally of Genoa from the thirteenth century, while Oneglia, the natural sea outlet of the Impero Valley, was linked to the Savoy in 1576.
Oneglia was founded as a town in the Middle Ages.

Porto Maurizio, on a promontory, was developed as a town in the years after the Thousand: The oldest is called Parasite.
