Lacco Ameno is a town in the province of Naples, situated on the island of Ischia, occupies the north-west and stretches along the sea and the foothills of Mount Epomeo.
Name Lacco according to most scholars is derived from the greek lakkos which means stone.
On 18 November 1862 the City Council, chaired by the Mayor Carmine Mennella, asked the King Vittorio Emanuele II, the addition of the "Amen" to the name Lacco, concession granted by Ministerial Decree of 4 January 1963.
It consists of several places: Mud, Mezzavia, Ortolano and the high zone of the country called "Area 167".
The main symbol is the "mushroom Lacco Ameno" located in the sea at the edge of a cliff, a cliff of tuff erupted from the mouth of the roads of the island and that with time it has cooled and has taken the form of a mushroom.
Lacco Ameno, a natural amphitheater that opens to the sea, thermal spring water has the highest ratio of radioactivity in the sources of so-called Santa Restituta, patron saint of the town and the whole Island.
According to tradition, in 304, the body of the virgin Restituta of Carthage, arrived from faraway Africa miraculously landing on a fragile little boat in the bay of San Montano, convicted of the Christian faith to be burned alive on a boat driven into the sea.
Santa Restituta is the patron saint of the island and the shrine dedicated to her, 16, 17 and 18 May each year is based, in memory of that miraculous event of solemn celebration. Lacco Ameno, consists of two churches: one in 1886, the other kind in the eleventh century on an early Christian basilica.
