The town is located on the Ionic side of Calabria, between the Aspromonte and Serre, in the middle between the sea and the mountains along the Strada Grande Comunicazione pass over the Ionian-Tyrrhenian Limina.
Inhabited since the times of Magna Graecia, its origins date back to IV - V century to C., it was built on the ruins of Malea, Colonia locrese mentioned by Thucydides.
The country, rich in art, history and culture, deserves a special visit, retains all its fascinating beauty of the medieval village with its narrow streets of the Kasbah (Casba), picturesque squares, houses falling over each other and the superb palatial building for the architectural style and of course the old churches, masterpieces of art and architectural painting.
Of particular interest arouses Grancia Santa Barbara (Sec. XI), two Km from the town, home to the renowned Santa Barbara Museum founded by the famous painter Nik Spataro, which each year draws hundreds of artists from all over the world.
Destination for religious tourism is the Shrine of St. Nicodemus, patron of the town, lived in Cen X, founder of the Monastery on Mount Kellerana, three kilometers of the Passo della Limina, the Sanctuary lies in the Aspromonte National Park and Point historical reference, religious and spiritual, a great many people, now home of a hermit Monaco and is popular with tourists and the faithful throughout the year.
Rare examples to visit are the ruins of the "Mine Macariace" located along the Fiumara Macariace and the Old Water Mill, still working, valuable evidence of industrial archeology.
There are numerous trails for hikers.
