The town's original name was Marina di Girgenti because since the fifteenth century was the seat of arrival of all production cerearicola Area of Agrigento.
In the sixteenth century ruler Charles V in the town erected a tower for defensive purposes.
The construction of the pier was first launched in 1749, thanks to the intervention of Bishop Lorenzo Gioeni, and was adopted in 1763.
In 1853 the country was given a new name: "Pier Girgenti," just to highlight the thriving port activity that affects the development of the city.
Subsequently, the town was named in memory of the famous Porto Empedocles philosopher Empedocles of Agrigento.
In 2003 the municipality decided to add Vigata next to the official name of Porto Empedocles in homage to the fictional name given to the country by writer Andrea Camilleri, novels and short stories whose protagonist Commissario Montalbano.
