Oristano (OR)

Sardinia (Italy)

Just south of the river Tirso, near the sea, overlooking the Gulf of Oristano namesake city. Fertile fields and crops mainly cereals, rice and other fruit and vegetables, form the outline.
There being no ports or airports nearby, is reached from the SS 131.
Oristano was founded in the eleventh century, becoming in 1070 the capital of the judge of Arborea.
Many of the architectural Judicial period that encompasses the Middle Ages.
Square in Rome survives a small part of what was once the medieval city wall: the high amount of the Tower of St. Christopher was in fact one of the entrances to the city called Porta Manna. The tower was built along the walls in 1291 by order of Judge Mariano II. The building is tall and massive, consisting of three levels, the last of which there is another smaller tower where there is an old bell. The open side of the tower facing the city, while the other three closed sides are facing outwards.
During the government of Mariano II in 1288, was also built the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Its original structure has remained low: only the apse, the base of the tower and the gothic chapel of Remedy with high vault.
The first restoration from the late sixteenth century, followed by those made in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when he underwent a complete redesign, as witnessed by the current Baroque style.
In the chapel of Remedy are several sculptures dating back to the Judicial, the two hurdles as marble. Staying near Piazza Roma you can not visit the House of Eleonora D'Arborea Giudicessa the most famous of Sardinia, in fact probably the headquarters of the gendarmerie post-Judicial. Here you can see the arms with the tree, symbol of the House of Arborea.
The building is located exactly in the way Parpaglia, where there is also the oldest and traditional inn in the city, where you can enjoy the excellent Vernaccia Oristano.
