Agricultural center of recent origin, is famous for tourist resort of Santa Margherita on the golf course and the ruins of Nora, the oldest town in Sardinia.
The archaeological site lies at the foot of Capo di Pula, a cape-clad Mediterranean with a tower built in the sixteenth century by the Spaniards to defend against pirates.
Founded by the Phoenicians in the ninth century BC el'VIII, Nora became the most important town in the Carthage island.
Its continued supremacy with Rome so that in 238 was chosen as the capital of the Roman province of Sardinia.
In the Middle Ages was abandoned because exposed to continuous raids of Arab pirates but in the meantime, the progressive lowering of ground water had already covered the three ports.
Little remains of the Punic period even if the rich furnishings of the graves bear witness to an intense merchant.
Carthaginian city you can visit the temple dedicated to the fertility goddess Tanit, on a hill overlooking the whole complex.
Ben designed the city with the Roman theater, baths, houses, cobbled streets with drainage system.
Of great interest in the mosaics characterized by the use of almost exclusively white, black and ocher.
Many findings, including the Punic inscriptions with the first attestation of the name Sardinia, are kept at the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.
The ceramics are displayed in the tiny local Archaeological Museum.
Excavations continue in the area of macellum, nearby the military.
Nearby stands the Romanesque church of Sant'Efisio Vittorini built by monks in the eleventh century, half of the annual procession which starts from Cagliari.
