Riva del Garda (TN)

Garda Lake - Trentino-Südtirol (Italy)

Riva del Garda (Trentino Riva simply call for more) is located in the northwest corner of Lake Garda.
On the west side stands overlooking Mount Rocchetta (1575 m) while on the east side stands the Monte Baldo (2218 m).
The first certain see Riva (Ripa) to aggregate in Roman municipium Brescia.
The pre-Roman finds are important, but we do not know for sure how the town was, or whether its population was Rhaetian or Gallic.
They named the populations of Benacenses and Sabine, in addition to the Gauls Cenomani.
Etruscan influences should not be underestimated, perhaps arriving in the Po Valley area just after the fall of races Gallic (Celtic) through the mountains of Lombardy.
Many Roman finds, we know that there was a Ripa nautical college and that a Metellus, military tribune, he built something (a castle?) In the highest part of town, this town-site Morocco (stone).
Major excavations at Monte San Martino (or Moon), near the village of Campi, are highlighting a village shrine fortified pre-Roman and Roman times, then abandoned (because now instead pagan?) Around for centuries even if work the church of St. Martin, highly revered in the Lombard period.
The fall of the Roman Empire, Riva changed hands several times following domination of the Goths, Lombards, Franks, but soon enter into the sphere of influence of the Prince Bishop of Trento, while remaining essentially a free city (own statutes).
Followed by periods of domination Scaligera Verona, Visconti, Venetian, alternating with periods of domination of the Prince Bishop of Trento.
Curious was the Venetian attempt, after several fruitless as naval attacks from Lake Garda, Riva del Garda behind the attack transported by land (one at a time) some ships that had climbed the Alps (and put into dry) along the valley Loppio through slides of wood and rolls with the force of 6,000 slaves (rowers of ships), a thousand yoke of oxen driven by local farmers being forced and about a thousand soldiers.
But now when three ships had arrived in Lake dross (and put in battle array) and a fourth was very close, the thirty militia to guard the pass of St. John (the opposite end of Lake Loppio) attacked at night with rafts designed to ferry cargo and people on the lake three Venetian ships, managing to ignite, so that the Venetians had no choice to return again at eleven ships in the waters of the Adige and humiliated back in Venice, abandoning a ship aground near Loppio and one near the Adige, after losing a naval battle against a tiny contingent of thirty militia that was certainly not an expert in navli battles and had never seen the sea.
Bastion of the Venetian building, built in the early 1500s on an existing medieval fortress on the hill said Germandri.
Nearby, on the hill (prehistoric fort) of Santa Maria Maddalena, resists time the ancient church of the same name, and the tower (in turn used as a church) of St. John Pinza, along the old road linking Edge Brescia, Via Campi / Trat / Val di Ledro.
Near the crossing Trat (tip LaRocca) resist the remains of the small medieval castle built by Rivani precisely control the passage.
Nearby (Valley of the Dead) took place in a ferocious battle between Visconti and Venice.
From the seventeenth century Riva del Garda will constantly part of the Prince Bishop of Trent, following the fortunes of the Trentino from Napoleonic rule that until al'unione Habsburg Italy in 1918.
