It is one of the smallest towns in Liguria, is situated on the Ligurian Apennines Po Valley, between the right side of the river and Cassingheno Brugneto left side of the river, tributaries of Trebbia.
The territory lies largely in the park Antola.
Already a feud of Fieschi, the mid-thirteenth century it came under the Republic of Genoa, and later under Bobbio.
Until 1923 was part of the province of Pavia.
