Tortora is the first town in the north-western Calabria facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the border with Basilicata.
Its territory is mainly hilly included largely in the Pollino National Park, bordered on the north with the towns of Maratea and Trecchina, north-east with Laura, to the east Laino Borgo, on the south by Aieta and Praia a Mare and to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The territory is divided into three man-made reality: the old town which has about 550 inhabitants, the mountain villages with about 1,050 inhabitants and the Navy with about 4400 inhabitants.
Tortora having a vast territory stretching from the Gulf of Policastro to the borders with Laura and Laino Borgo, has a climate very different depending on the area.
The marina was built almost at sea level has mild winters and hot summers, unlike fractions placed upright in the high mountains, we have short summers and cool winters, where the temperature often drops below zero.
A mild climate throughout the year has in the historic hub and in neighboring villages, where only in rare exceptions in winter the temperature drops below freezing, the summers are essentially fresh and airy, but there are peaks in high temperatures.
Tortora Marina lies on a plain overlooking the Gulf of Policastro, now has around 4400 inhabitants and the mid-eighties became the administrative center of the town of Dove, with the shift of the Town Hall from Tortora Tortora Navy Historical Center.
It has grown exponentially in the late seventies, was initially divided into ten fractions that are then merged.
Fractions were originally: Benefits, Crisos, Culture, Pool, Contractor, Falconara, Pantani, Pergola, Poiarelli and Riviera.
