Basilicata, also known as Lucania, is a region of southern Italy with about 600,000 inhabitants.
It is bordered to the south east by the Ionian Sea (Gulf of Taranto), to the east by Puglia, Campania in the west, south-west by the Tyrrhenian Sea and south to Calabria.
The four major cities are Potenza (capital of region and province) and Matera (Province); Melfi and Policoro not capital city but have a great economic importance in the region.
The historical region called Lucania also includes a large area currently in Campania (Cilento and Vallo di Diano), but also in Calabria (the Cosentino) and Puglia (Taranto and Foggia some municipalities).
The Basilicata territory is mostly mountainous (46.8%). The main findings of the Appennino Lucano are: Serra Dolcedorme (2267 m), Pollino (2248 m), Sirino (2007 m), Papa (2000 m), Volturino (1836 m), Serranetta (1472 m).
In the north-western region is an extinct volcano Mount Vulture.
The hills are the 45,13% of the area and are of a clay, subject to erosion resulting in landslides.
Plains occupy only l '8% of the territory. The biggest is the plain of Metaponto which occupies the southern part of the region, along the Ionian coast.
The rivers are torrential character codes and are the Bradano, Basento, the Agri, Sinni and Cavone.
Among the lakes, to Monticchio has volcanic origins, while those of Stone Pertusillo, San Julian and Monte Cotugno have been artificially constructed to produce electricity.
The coasts of the Ionian coast are low and sandy, while those of the Tyrrhenian coast is high and rocky.
The climate is Mediterranean and continental coasts on mountain slopes.
Basilicata has a great environmental diversity, it could be divided into 5 different zones, because the north-east is the area of Vulture-Melfese characteristics of plateaus mostly sown with wheat, while in the area of Vulture have alternating woods and vineyards to the north-north-west Potentino with a prevalence of woods and mountains with an average height of 1200-1500 meters in the middle we have the hills of Matera, which has hills and high mountains, with great presence of clay and barren badlands to the south-west but there is Lagronegrese and Pollino that represents the true mountain Luke heights even higher than 2000 meters and a strong presence of forests and woods, and finally south-south-east we have the Metapontino which is a huge floodplain where intensive agriculture is practiced in an industrial, a type of coast-type low and sandy.
