Favignana Island

(Italian: Isola di Favignana)
»» Sicily

With its 19.4 square kilometers, and its 3500 inhabitants is the largest and most populated island of the archipelago.
It has the characteristic shape of a butterfly, the eastern part of the island is more level and more inhabited.
The Greeks called it Aegusa, the current name derives from wind Favonio.
In its waters has fought the battle of Egadi between Carthaginians and Romans in 241 BC
The only mountain that divides the island is Mount St. Catherine, on top of which stands the homonym fort, built by the Normans on Arab and expanded existing facilities in the seventeenth century by the Spanish.
On the island, there are several quarries open tuff, whose fund is now used to keep crops safe from wind.
At Favignana's famous tonnare are still active.
To visit the Tonnara Florio, the port, an example of industrial archeology, I remember a time when the entire life of the islanders, revolved around this activity.
Favignana is a beautiful island full of picturesque spots such as coves (Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra) and its caves, once visited by the monk seal.
