The park includes the plateau, the slopes and foothills of the Giara, called "of Gesturi", a town which owns the largest part of territory (municipality of: Albagiara, Assolo, Barumini, Genoni, Genuri, Gesturi, Gonnosnò, Nuragus, Nureci, Senis, Setzu, Sini, Tuili, Usellus).
La Giara is a plateau volcanism originated from the late Miocene and is the most popular and extended to other similar formations in Sardinia (45 sq km, 12 km long, 609 m asl).
It consists of a thick basaltic layer supported by a pedestal of limestone-marl benches.
