On the
river Tirso,
Sardinia, in the
region of Barigadu, is one of the largest artificial lakes in
Italy, that of
Lake Omodeo.
With the massive
dam of Santa Chiara in
Ula Tirso,
Lake Omodeo, with an area of 22 sq km
is the largest artificial lake in Italy, storage capacity of 800 million square meters of water, at the time of its construction, the dam was considered a mammoth work, while the basin that was formed had a long record of the largest artificial lake in Europe.
More than 20 km long, was built to regulate the river, but also for power generation and irrigation.
Work on its construction ended in 1924, when it was opened, and 16,000 workers were employed.
It was deliberate and designed by
engineer Angelo Omodeo and was built in five years, under the direction of the
engineer Giulio Dolcetti.
With regard to the current archaeological evidence of the presence of life forms are very ancient.
On the shores of
Lake Omodeo are found traces of a forest fossilized by volcanic eruptions, dating back to the Miocene, between 20 and 30 million years ago, these trunks, those who managed to safeguard the looted, as well as being the oldest objects we have and hold the fascination of those who crossed not only the centuries but millennia and geological eras, are now a very important witness of climatic-environmental conditions at the time.
During periods of dry, its waters emerge various nuraghi, still in good condition, which were completely submerged with the creation of the reservoir.
